Here is a photo of the exciting day in 1959 that the Shopping Center finally opened in the suburb I grew up in. You can see the Jewel where my mom bought Wonder Bread!

Before the miracle of that shopping center, we had to drive about 10 miles to an actual town for groceries. These housing developments were literally built in the middle of nowhere. Just rows of little houses built on the farmland.

Today, that area has one of the world's biggest indoor malls and millions of adjacent retail square footage: the monster that is Woodfield.
